An autobiography is a document that contains data about the main stages of a citizen’s life. It is required to assess the social information about the applicant.
In accordance with Art. 146 of the RF IC, specialists from the guardianship department must evaluate information about the citizen, his moral and personal qualities. The autobiography includes information about education and work experience.
In accordance with Government Decree No. 423 of 2009, an autobiography is included in the list of documents that a citizen must submit to the guardianship department.
The document is submitted in the following cases:
- with an application for the issuance of a conclusion on the possibility of becoming a candidate for surrogate parents;
- with an application for the issuance of an opinion on the possibility of being a guardian of an incapacitated citizen.
Thus, without an autobiography, a citizen will not be able to adopt a child or take care of an incapacitated relative. Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to the design of this document.
Legislative regulation
In Art. , Civil Code and Art. 145, 146 IC indicates that when implementing the procedure for adoption or registration of guardianship, you should focus on Federal Law No. By-laws are also taken into account - Government Decrees No. 423 (issues of guardianship and trusteeship of minors) and No. 927 (similar issues, but in relation to incapacitated or partially incompetent persons). Letter of the Ministry of Education and Science No. 06-364 discusses the nuances of applying the above legislative acts.

Form
A prerequisite is the execution of an autobiography in writing. A citizen has the right to prepare a document by hand or print it on a computer.
The applicant must sign and date the document at the end. If the autobiography is printed on a computer, the signature must still be affixed by hand.
In [current_date format='Y'] the law does not provide for the possibility of issuing an autobiography in the form of an electronic document. Even when submitting an application through State Services, a citizen must prepare an autobiography for guardianship. When conducting a residential inspection, a specialist will pick it up.
Features of the presentation of information in an autobiography
The requirements of guardianship authorities for candidates are not so strict, but they must meet certain qualities. However, the legislation does not define evaluation criteria for these qualities. The inspector's analysis of the candidate's qualities is carried out subjectively. Therefore, when presenting an autobiography, a candidate is not recommended to indicate events and facts from life that present him from a negative side. The emphasis should be on the positive aspects of his life. You can point out that the family is exemplary, has no criminal record, has many awards and positive references from their places of work.
Expert commentary

Lawyer
There is no need to distort information or invent anything. If it is established that the information specified in the autobiography does not correspond to the documents and certificates presented, the inspector may ask to rewrite the document. This may delay the consideration of the issue of appointing a guardian and last more than 7 days allotted for this.
Registration procedure
In 2021, the law does not establish exact requirements for the document. However, legal practice provides for a number of conditions for preparing an autobiography.
Basic Rules:
- Statement of facts . The document must contain only truthful information about the applicant’s life. Only facts that are relevant are included in the document. For example, it is necessary to include information about marriage, divorce, widowhood, employment, and birth of children.
- Conciseness . There is no need to stretch the document significantly. The optimal size is 1 A4 page.
- Decor . Although the law does not specify a specific requirement, it is advisable to type the information on a computer. This option is especially recommended for citizens with illegible handwriting.
- Frequency of presentation . When presenting, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the chronology of events. The document must contain a time frame.
Example .
From 2001 to 2004, I worked at the Krasnopresnenskaya Central Regional Hospital as the head of the medical unit.
What can cause a guardianship to be revoked?
After an autobiography is written to establish guardianship of an adult citizen or a child, the accuracy of the data will be checked for 7 days. Based on the results of the analysis of the case, the applicant is allowed to assume the responsibilities of a guardian. They are canceled for several reasons:
- emancipation of a minor - he has reached 16 years of age;
- death of the ward or adoptive parents;
- restoration of the rights of the biological mother and father;
- loss of legal capacity by the guardian;
- voluntary refusal;
- non-compliance with children's rights;
- the presence of a ban from guardianship authorities.
On a note! If the autobiography does not correspond to official documents, the guardianship authorities also refuse guardianship.
Compliance with the rules for compiling an autobiography increases the applicant’s chances of obtaining guardianship rights. Inspectors are focused on the completeness, accuracy, and reliability of data about the applicant’s life. For 2021, the requirements for drawing up the document have not changed; a unified form has not appeared.
Sequence of presentation
A short autobiography is compiled in strict accordance with the chronology of events. Therefore, it is necessary to first divide life into several periods:
- Birth . The date and place of birth, information about parents, brothers and sisters are indicated.
- Education (school, institute, college). The location of the educational institution, dates of admission and graduation are indicated.
- Labor activity . The periods and names of employing enterprises are listed. If there were many places of work, then it is advisable to indicate the first (as the beginning of the work experience) and the last 2-3 (including the current one).
- Family status . The dates of marriage, divorce, and periods of widowhood are indicated. The birth dates of children (if any) must be included.
- Reasons for contacting the guardianship department . Although the law provides for the need to fill out a separate application for appointment as a guardian or for issuing an opinion on the possibility of becoming a candidate, it is advisable to briefly explain the reasons for the application in the autobiography.
Example . My husband and I have been married for over 10 years. However, due to health reasons, she cannot have children. We would like to welcome a child between 0 and 1 year old into our family.
In what situations can guardianship be terminated?
Even when, based on the results of an analysis of a person’s case, he is allowed to become the child’s guardian, in the future such a decision can be annulled. This is done in the following moments:
- emancipation of a child who reaches the age category of 16 years;
- death of the ward or his adoptive father or mother;
- restoration of powers of real parents;
- due to prohibition, which is established by the guardianship authority due to non-compliance with the child’s powers;
- when the adoptive parent becomes incapacitated;
- independent refusal.
Thus, the characteristic for guardianship is considered the main documentation for formalizing the authority to adopt. Because of this, it is very important to take its preparation seriously. The final outcome of the guardianship and trustee bodies largely depends on the accuracy, truth and completeness of the data provided by the applicant about his own life.
The above indicated how to write a characteristic for guardianship according to the model. The information will help you draw up documentation correctly and thereby gain the favor of representatives of the guardianship authorities.
It should be said right away that the reference is the most important document, without which a husband and wife will not be able to adopt a child. The Board of Guardians will definitely refuse a person who has written incorrect information in the application form. This can significantly reduce a citizen’s chances of obtaining rights to a child.
Therefore, you should not take risks and be sure to provide the correct data, even if the characteristics are not enough. In any case, the guardianship council will check all the information provided in the documentation and evaluate the candidate as a future parent.
Documents for completing an autobiography
The autobiography must be completed on the basis of documents. Each fact must be supported by relevant information.
No. | Basic data |
1 | Civil passport (full name, date and place of birth, place of registration) |
2 | Education document (certificate, diploma, certificate) |
3 | Information about marital status (birth certificate of children, marriage/divorce, death of spouse) |
4 | Information on employment (copy of work record book, certificate of registration with the Employment Center, information on receiving a labor pension) |
Writing an autobiography for the adoption of a wife's baby
In this situation, the sample characteristics for the adoption of the wife's baby will differ from those described. Since the future guardian is considered the legal spouse of the baby’s mother, the procedure for obtaining guardianship is greatly simplified for him.
The autobiography must include the following information:
- year of birth and full name;
- family composition (each person must be indicated);
- education data (with a list of all educational institutions);
- information about professional work (place of work and position held).
At the end of the autobiography, a signature and date are affixed. A similar document is also applicable for women, mothers of an adoptee.
Sample of filling out an autobiography
Depending on the reasons for preparing the document, information about the candidate may vary. If general information (date and place of birth, work activity and education) is mandatory for everyone, then a number of issues are covered depending on the reasons for the application.
A citizen can contact the guardianship department to formalize:
- adoption of a child without parental care;
- intra-family adoption;
- conclusions on the possibility of being a guardian of a minor;
- conclusions about the possibility of being a guardian of an incapacitated person.
Sample autobiography for guardianship
for adoption of wife's child
In the autobiography, the potential adoptive parent must indicate the following information:
- period of marriage with the child’s parent;
- presence of previous marriages;
- presence of children from previous marriages;
- presence of illegitimate children;
- number of children living with the applicant;
- the fact of paying child support for minor children with whom he does not live.
The need to write an autobiography
The law of the Russian Federation establishes requirements for citizens who wish to adopt a child. And from an autobiography you can really find out whether there were certain undesirable factors or not. These include, for example, a criminal record.
This documentation also helps inspectors from guardianship authorities investigate the identity of the applicant for adoption. Thus, when there is information about frequent changes of place of work indicating the position, this may indicate the candidate’s fickleness and unbalanced character. In this situation, guardianship authorities are able to grant a waiver, guided by the canons of reasonableness.
An autobiography for guardianship must be compiled not only by the applicant, but also by his spouse. This requirement is considered mandatory.
Important Rules
The legislation does not provide for clear formulations when drawing up such documentation . But when compiling a short personal biography, you must adhere to the following rules:
- Data. It is required to describe the maximum number of vital events.
- Clear wording. Thoughts should be briefly and clearly formulated.
- Accuracy.
Therefore, before writing an autobiography, you should make a plan to properly structure the text.
What to pay attention to
To correctly write an autobiography for the guardianship authorities, you should pay attention to a number of nuances:
- according to the rules for document preparation, the signature is placed in the lower right corner under the text of the document, and the date is in the lower left;
- mention of all organizations in the text must be correct and complete, without abbreviations;
- descriptions of circumstances and events of the past must be indicated in the past tense;
- the entire text must be written on behalf of the future adoptive parent, that is, in the first person;
- text that is too long complicates perception, and text that is too short may not be informative enough, so it makes sense to keep it to one to one and a half sheets of A4.
Compilation rules
An autobiography is a self-portrait of a person, a statement on paper of significant life events from the beginning to the present. Such a biography is compiled arbitrarily; the sample for preparing the document is not legally established. In some regions, guardianship authorities develop templates for writing an autobiography, but the candidate for guardianship has the right to prepare the document independently.
Considering that the facts of your life history can influence the decision of public services about the possibility of appointing you as a guardian, let's consider the rules for writing an autobiography.
- The information presented in the autobiography must be exclusively reliable. Documents may be requested from you to confirm the authenticity of the facts. Revealed lies will not increase the chances of obtaining guardianship.
- The chronology of events should be observed. For example, first you need to indicate the date of marriage, and then the date of divorce, but not vice versa.
- Do not confuse your autobiography with the resume you are preparing for a job. In the resume, the emphasis is on business and professional qualities, educational level, in the autobiography - on personal ones.
- Hobbies and interests must be indicated. They perfectly characterize you and help you understand what you can give to a child when registering guardianship (adoption);
- You shouldn't write too much - 1 or 2 pages is enough. The style of presentation is businesslike, without introductory words and “lyrical digressions”
Let's look at what you need to write about in your autobiography.
- personal data - last name, first name, patronymic (last - if available), place and date of birth;
- information about your parents or persons who raised you (grandmother, aunt, uncle, etc.): last name, first name, patronymic, occupation (for example, teacher);
- then the process of acquiring knowledge follows chronologically: describe in what periods you studied at school, in which one; then indicate the receipt of secondary or higher vocational education with the dates of admission and graduation;
- then the professional activity must be described, indicating the periods, the name of the organization (enterprise) and the position held (rate). Each case of hiring and dismissal must be spelled out separately. If there were transfers while working in one institution, this must also be reflected. The presence of awards should be mentioned. Indicate the period of maternity leave (for women).
- the marital status of the candidate for marriage is indicated (single/not married; date of marriage/divorce). Brief description of the spouse;
- presence of children, including adults;
- description of interests, hobbies.
We bring to your attention a sample autobiography for guardianship, by analogy with which you can prepare your own version.

Contents of the autobiographical document
According to the developed form, in the document about himself, the applicant for guardianship must indicate the following information:

- nationality, especially if it coincides with the nationality of the future ward, if he is a child (this will be a priority when choosing a guardian);

In this case, the following information will be important for guardianship:
- this is a spiritual connection with the ward. This may happen if the candidate for guardianship has been maintaining friendly relations with an elderly person for a long time. This fact must be communicated in the autobiography;
- the presence of a family connection (even if distant) with the ward;
- if you have medical education or experience caring for the elderly, this information must be indicated;
- fact of working with elderly people in the past.
Before writing an autobiography, it is better to consult with the guardianship inspector about all the nuances of presenting information in order to avoid returning the document for revision.
What is an autobiography and why is it needed?
When considering candidates for adoptive parents, guardianship authorities pay great attention to their personalities, lifestyle and facts, information about which can have both a positive and negative impact on the decision on guardianship. Therefore, this document should be drawn up with full attention to every detail contained in it.
The essence of the document is a chronological presentation of the main stages of life and the correct placement of emphasis on certain events. The purpose of drawing up the document is to convince the competent authorities to make a positive decision regarding the adoption of the child. Therefore, the information in this document should provide the maximum opportunity to get an idea of the personality of the adoptive parents and those personal qualities, life experiences and prospects that will help them become good parents and create optimal conditions for the child’s life.
Information about the financial well-being of the family is considered important. Moreover, in addition to information about the main income and housing, it would not be superfluous to report the availability, for example, of country real estate where the child can relax in the summer.
In addition to the very fact of employment, it makes sense to describe how often and for what reasons the applicant changes jobs. Of course, in our time the labor market is unstable, and specialists often strive, whenever possible, to find a job where they are most in demand, and change it if the employer does not meet their expectations, which is quite understandable.
However, it is important to correctly reflect this: if an applicant changes jobs from time to time, he is never left without income for a long time, and changing places of employment does not hinder, but, on the contrary, helps improve the well-being of the family.
If the future adoptive parent has been working in one place for many years and has certain achievements (professional awards, career advancement), indicating these facts will also allow one to form an impression of his personal qualities. It also makes sense to indicate significant prospects - for example, completing education, advanced training, or opening an inheritance business, the completion of which will increase the well-being of the family.
But, of course, all information in the autobiography must be true, and the applicant must be able to prove its accuracy if the guardianship authorities have any doubts.
Important! Providing deliberately false information in an autobiography for the procedure for adopting a child can greatly complicate the likelihood of making a positive decision on adoption in favor of these adoptive parents.
The compiler of an autobiography for the adoption of a child can independently decide what information to present about himself and in what sequence to arrange it. At the same time, of course, there are generally accepted rules and recommendations for drawing up this document regarding the necessary points and information that should be disclosed.
